In attempts to keep our campaign log more up to date and perhaps interest a few readers, I have created a Ptolus Campaign page.  This is where I will post the ’season two’ journal entries.  For those interested in ’season one’ you can check out the old version of the site by clicking HERE.

ENWorld — Sean K. Reynolds joins Paizo to work on Pathfinder

Another great coup as Paizo continues to put key components of the 3.x design team back together.   As the gaming community splits on the acceptance of 4e it is good to see that a strong viable alternative is developing in Pathfinder which remains basic on the OGL and 3.5 edition.  With the release of their softcover beta rules set in August, it will be interesting to see how strong the sales are for new product using the 3.5 ruleset.

I am now really interested in picking the new Pathfinder RPG when it comes out in August.  4e what?

I was busily working away this evening on getting some final grades knocked out for my students when an e-mail appeared from one of my players.  He has been reading through the 4e PHB for the better part of a week now and here are his ‘comments’.  In an attempt to keep it clean here I have edited only for language.  I think the feeling still comes through however. It has been an interesting few weeks here that has led to little posting but some time to look at the new 4e rules which were leaked to the internet within the past week.  Word spread like wildfire and forums are crammed with opinions of both the initial adventure, Keep on the Shadowfell and the core rulebooks themselves.

Those of you who have read some of my earlier posts know that most of my group were not very enthusiastic about the new edition based on the information that was released throughout the year by WotC.  We agreed to give the new rules a shot and my pre-order from my local FLGS will be filled on Friday.   This is the first of series of posts as the group works it way through the first module provided by WotC.

THERE BE SPOILERS AHEAD, MATEY!!!!

I am not sure if this is happening to other groups but it seems like our gaming group is on pause.  For one it seems to be the time of year where people start to miss sessions due to other committments but it also seems like with 4e on the horizon that no one wants to really dive into anything new.  A number of our campaigns are in various stages of completion.  I have my almost year long Ptolus campaign that is nearly at the climax of the Night of Dissolution storyline while Darren has a Greyhawk game that we have played a number of sessions in.  Todd is running a Twilight 2000 game which is going slowly but is a nice change of pace from the sword and sorcery.  However, it just seems like everyone is waiting for….something. Yes, I am alive and finally back at the keyboard to write. I have been down this road before. Real life gets busy when you teach high school and have a 15 month-old that you don’t get much time with. By the time you get home, get everyone fed and then through the bath, bottle, books and bed routine its 8pm (if all goes well). Now, you must get lessons planned for the next day and do any marking that has piled up. That usually puts it about 10pm (again, if you are lucky). If your brain is not mush at this point, you sit down at the computer and answer e-mails and surf a little to read some of the wonderfully crafted posts both other more disciplined bloggers and despair that you will never reach that level of eloquence. Tonight is gaming night.  It’s tough to game on Fridays sometimes just because the week can be long.  We even have had a player fall asleep during a session!  We try not to take offence (he swears its sleep apnea) as we have all been there.  Tonight we are continuing our Twilight 2000 game.

A couple months ago we decided that before the release of 4th edition that we would take a break from the glut of d20 games and play something different – a palate cleanser if you will.    So far we have had two sessions and are slowly learning (or re-familiarizing ourselves with) the ruleset.  I must say I am enjoying the change of genre and system.

Does anyone else rotate their gaming systems and genres to keep things fresh?  What games are you playing out there when you track a break from the juggernaut that is d20?

ENWorld – Morrus 4th Edition D&D / d20 News and Reviews Site – General – Quick Sheets

A neat idea from ENWorld member, Firebeetle for those of you who are sticking with 3.x edition. Tent Cards for your character sheets.  One side faces the player and the other faces the GM so he/she can see relevant information without having to have check the notes.  Developed for a publisher before the market dropped out for 3.5 stuff Firebeetle is presenting the cards as donationware.  Basically, if you like them, please donate to Gary Gygax’s favourite charity, the Christian’s Children Fund.  If you don’t want to click through ENworld to get to the download, you can get there by clicking HERE.

I like them but then again I am a sucker for organizational thing for gaming.  I love my initiative tracker and used initiative tracker so I’ll give these a whirl when I start back on my Ptolus campaign.

GEORGE PEREZ ON LEGION OF 3 WORLDS, II – NEWSARAMA

Great interview with George Perez who happens to be my favourite comic book artist.  I grew up reading New Teen Titans drawn by George and written by Marv Wolfman.  Perez is a master storyteller and no one can do the multiple character splash page quite like George.

This series, spinning out of DC’s summer event, Final Crisis, looks to be a lot of fun.  Geoff Johns is the writing and he currently is DC’s go-to writer for cleaning up character continuity and prepping them for a new audience.  If there is any group that could use some streamlining and simplifying its the Legion of Super-Heroes.  I have enjoyed the current version of the Legion but there are people who are equally passionate for previous incarnations.  I think this series will be a great read.  Any other Perez fans out there!  Come on, the man drawns fantastic rocks!

I am in the process of trying to get my blog out there as I work through the start-up process.  Now that I have a theme that I don’t hate (but don’t necessarily love) and am working on getting some regular content out there, I have to move to promotion.  Read the rest of this entry »
